The sinking feeling this book leaves you with is unmatched. Monday’s not coming isn’t hard to read because it’s unrealistic; it’s hard to read because it’s too real. It shines a brutal light on how easily Black girls, especially young Black girls, can disappear without anyone noticing or caring. What makes it hit even harder is that we’re seeing it all through the eyes of Claudia, a child who hasn’t fully processed the weight of her grief or the reality of what happened to her best friend. Tiffany D. Jackson absolutely nailed the emotional perspective of a grieving child. Claudia’s confusion, desperation, and hope are devastatingly believable.
Of course, she can’t wrap her head around the fact that her best friend was murdered and hidden in a freezer by her own mother. No child could.
This book doesn’t need a life-changing plot twist to be powerful, the horror is the truth it tells. It destroyed me. And that’s why I recommend it to everyone.
