This is a book I think I'd like better upon reread, and I'm not so sure the audiobook was the correct choice either. There's nothing particularly wrong with it, but I found it hard to focus on, so I'll read it by myself next time for sure.
The plot moved at a snail pace, and nothing happened until the last third, which may have affected my rating. I wasn't really in the mood for a slower paced book, to be honest.
I (wrongly) assumed this was a standalone as well, but since that didn't turn out to be the case, the pacing makes more sense and I'm more willing to forgive it (hence the reread comment).
What I did enjoy was Vasalie as a character (for the most part, when she wasn't making silly choices), the worldbuilding, the disability rep, and, as a dancer myself, the dances she performed (even if those could get a bit repetitive).
Though I would've liked to have seen the aftermath of her performances, it would've made for more impactful rep. Usually there'd be a time skip, and we can assume she was resting in between, but I wanted to see it.
Also, this series (duology?) would've been so much better if it was whychoose, I'm just saying. It seemed like it was heading in that direction for a good while there.
The love interests and side characters could've used more development, but it wasn't that bad for a debut book. I will be reading the next one when it's out.
3.5
