Not a bad start to a series, though I need to consider if I want to invest the time in reading the other 5 books (big series). There isn't anything that particularly sets this story apart from a lot of other fairly competent fantasy.

This was pretty great, overall. I always like stories about assassin's and thieves and stuff, as well as "fallen on hard times but redemption cometh". And this hits both spots. The overall magic system regarding the Blades and Shades symbiosis is preeeety neat, and I'd love a novel set back when the Goddess was alive and the order was at the peak of it's power.

Overall the plot was semi predictable, but still enjoyable. The characters were well written, and felt more real than not. Kind of just brain candy, but good for all that. I'll read some more of these, for sure.

The good at heart assassin and hero without a cause is done ad nauseam - and better. There are some good ideas in it, and I might read the next one. The language could use a serious editor and maybe the main character could have had lost some of his abilities after being a drunk for five odd years instead of just talking about he had lost some abilities. Throwing duel swords at the same time?

EDIT: Deathwalker is a nice homage to Gemmell.

The vivid descriptions of violence aren't my thing.

Latter half picked up nicely, good mythology and world building but somehow it all lacked excitement.

This book left me slightly disappointed. It was very entertaining at first, but it suffered from being the first book in a new universe. The author, rather clumsily, added what I felt was too much exposition. Some things should have been revealed/explained later to make for an easier read. I might still pick up the second book of this series, because I have the hope that the author could focus more on the story and the characters.

This was good, but didn't blow me away.
I loved the idea with the shadow companions, and liked the idea of the main character being an ex assassin.

The main male and female characters ending up having sex was just so predictable.

Some parts felt a bit slow, and at other times a bit rushed, so I'd have prefered a more balanced pace throughout the book.

There were quite some typos (missing words) in the last third - in a traditionally published book that is annoying.

Overall it was still an entertaining read, that you can consider when you're looking for something while waiting for the next installment of your favorite authors.
