why this book is recommended is beyond me. to be fair i didn't finish it, i found the characters utterly unlikable across the board, there was huge amounts of climate doomism, a japanese woman literally gets turned on by the idea of killing a whale (jesus christ!) and the mermaids themselves aren't scary. maybe because also i didn't care if any of these characters died because they suck. got about half way through before i couldn't take it anymore.
