Very interesting premise for a book, the plot was great! The character development and ending?.. not so much.
The characters felt flat and their relationships didn't matter to the storyline or even really provide enough for the reader to be emotionally invested, so wouldn't read if you're here for that. There were definitely some unnecessary tangents with side characters that didn't really need to be there and took away from the focus on the plot.

I loved the science-y bits and the overall scifi feel this book gave! The detail to mermaid anatomy and habits was very interesting! If you're reading it for scary killer mermaids, this book is an 11/10. The only thing I wish this book had more of was a better ending with more of a finale. The ending was extremely abrupt and short and honestly fell flat for me because there was so much build up and action towards the end!
More about what I wish I wanted from characters/plot:
I wish that there was more post story findings and research news! They found so much on the trip, but we didn't even get in to what our main characters did with the findings? What will Tory do now that she found mermaids? What will Dr. Toth do? Is Luis's research complete now? Will Imagine actually air the recordings taken during the trip? There was so much the ending didn't wrap up! Really left me disappointed.

Into the Drowning Deep is a fantastic read. It has a slow start to introduce readers to a plentiful cast of characters that are so deeply human in a way that a lot of horror novels don't get into with secondary characters. Once the action picks up, though, it doesn't slow down. The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that the ending felt a little too light on details.

I love all the representation in the book. The last 150-ish pages had me so enthralled I couldn’t put it down. My only critique is that is was really slow to get through at times and took a long time to pick up, I don’t think it needed to be as long as it was.

3.5 stars; What I liked about this book was that it felt like a movie. I enjoyed the storytelling as well as the format Mira Grant utilized. I also appreciated the themes she touched on within the book. However, there was just such a lack of urgency surrounding the character’s behaviors, and the groups of characters were also way too isolated from each other in my opinion. You planned to be on a ship surrounded by violent creatures and you didn’t implement better communication features? Like not even some walkie-talkies??

Read this book if you love sea monsters, a plausible theory as to the biology of mermaids if they existed, and a diverse cast with clearly defined goals.

Do not read this book if you need a lot of character development, are looking for a more traditional mermaid, or aren’t interested in a battleground of science.

I loved this book and didn’t want it to end. The cast of characters held my interest and I enjoyed how their turn on the page gave a concise slice of their worldview, goals, and personality. It was really fun to watch all these scientists put things together to try and figure out how the mermaids worked. I am definitely not a marine biologist or scientist in any capacity, but I like when things make sense, and the science in the book felt plausible enough to me as a layperson that I was like “damn yeah maybe that IS how they would work.”

The climax was a little underwhelming, I would have liked to see more of the *finale,* but it wasn’t as long and drawn out to me as a lot of actiony books are, so it didn’t ruin the book for me.

I wouldn’t shut up about mermaids the entire time I was reading this. It was so fun, one of my favorite books that I’ve read this year!
