Throughout the book, I kept wondering why history refers to Native Americans by an English Americanized name rather than the name in their native tongue. This book was poignant and beautiful. Given that it is 30 years old it may also have been well ahead of its time in the treatment of the American Indian history. I would be interested to read the history from a Native American author as well.

I can't say I liked this book because of how painful it was to read, but I am glad that I read it. It tells an important part of American history, and I would encourage people to read it.... However, some parts are rather graphic, and I wouldn't suggest reading it all at once. I only read 1-2 chapters a week and that was manageable, but I doubt I would have gotten through it if I wasn't reading happier books along with it.
I give it 3 stars because, as it was a good book, it wasn't enjoyable to read.

I haven't read a history book like this for a while. It brought my love for history again.
It is an unfortunate story about the struggle and the deaths of the natives against the white settlers while protecting their land. It features key figures in the story that had immense significance, such as Sitting Bull, Red Cloud, Black Kettle, and more.
It's a sad book but still a book you don't want to miss. If you are interested in Native American history, this book is for you.

My daughter and I listened to this on a cross country road trip. It was a heart-wrenching but relevant accompaniment to our journey, giving us s different perspective to the stories of Lewis and Clark, the pioneers, the gold rush, etc. that we’re celebrated at almost every stop along the way.

Not sure I have the words for this yet other than that the history of the making of the American West is horrific. If only we knew it. Spoke of it. Repented of it.
We are not the people we think we are. This nation is not what it thinks it is. We who claim Christ do not possess the inheritance of nonviolence, benevolence, and peace we think we do. Ours is an inheritance of dispossession. Of violence. Of genocide. All condoned by a culture that baptized racial and cultural supremacy as God-ordained. This is our past. But God willing it does not have to be our future.
Necessary reading for all Americans.
God have mercy on us.
