Terrific books. I remember loving them as a child, and I grew up with Laura on TV, too. Happy memories.

This is definitely my favorite book in the Little House series. I just love Laura and Almanzo's story, and it is such an easy read. It feels so natural and warm and cozy, and it doesn't feel like I'm reading a book but like I'm actually in the world with them. In a world full of heavy, action-packed books, it's nice to go back to the slow-paced, character-driven classics. It is always a joy to read this, and I will definitely be picking it up over and over again.

Some themes don't hold up well for raising kids in 2024-5. I spent much less time line-editing out derogatory, racist phrases in this book than in the previous.

So eyeopening to read this book as adult. There were two parts that stuck out to me during this read.

When Laura taught school at the Brewster settlement and lived with the very unhappy Brewster family. Laura's family is always presented as a fairly happy (or at least cohesive) unit - and to be introduced to Mrs. Brewster, who is clearly unhappy and perhaps clinically depressed, really hammers home how difficult and solitary it could be to stake a claim.

At the end of the book, when Laura questions Almanzo about the use of the word "obey" in marriage vows. She has already agreed with Almanzo that she is independent, and he appears to like and appreciate her fiery spirit and general confidence. But then: "'Are you for woman's rights, like Eliza?' Almanzo asked with surprise. 'No,' Laura replied. 'I do not want to vote. But I cannot make a promise that I will not keep, and, Almanzo, even if I tried, I do not think I could obey anybody against my better judgment." I wonder why Laura doesn't want to vote, and what voting actually signifies to her. This kind of hammered home how women were forced to be strong and independent to survive and be happy in these settlements - it was just a fact of life. Voting, and having "equal rights" had a completely different context.

I'm so excited to read Laura's annotated memoirs and get a more rounded picture of Pa, and perhaps Mary.

Laura catching strays from Mrs. Brewster like damn what did she ever do to you!!

But Laura coming to the conclusion that Mrs. Brewster is just mean to be mean when it's like clearly she's not happy here and was moved here against her will...

These Happy Golden Years alternative title: Laura Witnesses a Woman Almost Murder Her Husband With a Knife

Nellie Olsen stfu challenge go. Her calling almanzo manny I'm gonna hurl

Love Laura setting boundaries she's always like you're free to do whatever you want but here are my conditions if you want me to be involved. And he is always like cool so I'll see you later then

And every time Laura questions almanzo he always proves himself. Like whenever she sets the boundaries she's like okay I guess I'll never see him again and then the next day he's like hey I'm back. And when he went back to Minnesota and she was starting to worry he would forget her and then surprised her on Christmas like he would walk 500 miles and he would walk 500 more

They are the epitome of "to be perfectly honest, all I wanted was to buy (build) a little house and spend my whole life with you"

Almanzo I need you to grow up and say no to your mom. Men will literally do anything except talk about how they feel

Glad that she said she wouldn't say obey at their wedding and that he didn't want her to say it. But when he asks her if she's for women's rights and she said NO and that she didn't wanna vote GIRL STAND UP
