Delightful Read

Eden always entertains. I love all of her books, and this was no exception. Consorts of the Red King is well written and keeps you in suspense. There needs to be a second book.

SciFi novela that had some fantasy elements and intriguing world building bits.

Content warnings include: violence, death, gore, terrorism, child soldiers, human trafficking, criminal activity, sex on-page, casual fatphobia.

A big part of Consorts of the Red King follows a pretty standart fantasy plot: big nation (colonists) want to take over smaller nation for its resources, and when the king refuses they team up with the evil uncle to kill the rest of the royal family. The prince survives by chance and now hides until he is stronger and can take back his kingdom, teaming up with a group of misfits along the way.
So far so good.

The team of misfits are a couple of space smugglers/mercenaries here. While their personalities were as basic as the main plot, their own personal little arc was intriguing and is tied to the sentient spaceships that exist in this setting: sentient by means of uploading people's consciousness (and sometimes getting rid of their body.)

Another intriguing part of the worldbuilding came from the small planet and its valuable resource - some sort of energy crystals. Except they are much more than just crystals. Sadly they were more or less in the background and not really elaborated in depth, but the parts that were they were super cool!!

The romance was well done, but didn't touch me as much as it might have.
The book's writing was okay and didn't bother me at all, but it wasn't the greatest - some scenes felt very disconnected and took me a few seconds to realize what was going on.
There was one event towards the late third of the book that felt very random and badly integrated. It makes more sense now that I checked and found another book by the author, [b:The Sentinel|18073225|The Sentinel|Eden Winters|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1387077445l/18073225._SY75_.jpg|25374999]. Both books do stand on their own, but the latter gives the backstore to some side characters.
Consorts of the Red King also certainly has enough minor open plot threads to warrant a sequel.

There were a few parts in the middle were I lost interest and had to force myself to go on, but overall I had a good time reading it - the pace especially picked up towards the end, causing me to read until late into the night and stay up much longer than planned.

I received an ARC and reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

This takes place in the future of The Sentinel. I got about 2/3 through before I realized that! A different type of story, mostly different characters, but still cool seeing the tie-in.

Interesting and tangled mmm sci-fi read. I found the multi POV to be interesting but a little confusing. The is a lot of exciting and twisty adventure and the world and characters are well written so I do definitely recommend!

This was one of the most interesting and unique sci-fi romance books I’ve read in a while. The world-building in this book is fascinating, especially when it comes to the sentient spaceships and the human ability of moving through cyberspace. Eden Winters crafted such a fascinating romance where species, and even the physical body, doesn’t matter as much as the emotional connection between beings. This book does feature a threesome, but it is an unorthodox and unique setup. I don’t want to give away any spoilers for the book, but trust me when I say the relationship is utterly addicting.

Darcy Stark does a fantastic job with the audiobook narration. He had to narrate such unique and interesting characters set in so many different and fascinating settings. He met this challenge spectacularly well and his performance in the audiobook really does the story justice. I thoroughly enjoyed both this story and the audiobook and highly recommend it.
