Dear Scott, please NEVER write a book without quotation marks again. HOWEVER, this was 6 star for me. And as much as I hate it.. maybe the fuzzy distinction between thoughts and words parallels the valley differences? Or I’m just trying to justify it because I loved this book so much

odile you are so annoying we would never be friends

With such a unique premise, I immediately fell in love with this book. We follow Odile, our fmc, who lives in her valley but is surrounded by 2 other identical valleys, except one is set 20 years in her future and the other 20 years her past. Separated into 2 parts, we get to follow both young Odile and mature Odile who both face different moral challenges and the power of time.

I love most books with time travel elements and this was beautifully done and heartbreaking at the same time.

P.S. this book was written without any quotations so that can be irritating at times if you're like me and can't handle it when Sally Rooney does it.

“In place of a clean conscience, I felt cleansed by conviction, the clarity of choosing.”

Incredible story. Melancholic, contemplative, and even drab at times (importantly so). It’s a story about grief, regret, choice, and consequence, where time doesn’t move faster just because you want it to. In the Valleys, time remains something you must wait on, something slow and speculative.

Howard’s take on “time travel” (if you want to call it that) is unique. There is some common paradox, but he makes it deeply human. I was worried the story wouldn’t resolve, but I think it did so perfectly.
