On the one hand, this ended up being a much slower and more romantic read than I’d gleamed from the blurb. The pacing is not ideal: just as things start to pick up, we jump through time and have to run through another hundred pages of setup and world-building.

On the other hand, there is a softness to the writing that holds an undeniable charm. I didn’t always empathize with the protagonist and certainly wasn’t gripped by any propulsion of plot, but something kept me going and I think that’s just the writing itself.

“Evening came without sunset. The daylight simply slid back into the earth.”

3.5 ⭐️ Honestly, I was going to give it a 2 but the last 80 or so pages deserve an extra 1.5 stars all by themselves. It was worth it but the middle was a slog, despite the book only being 290 pages total. Probably could have been workshopped into a killer short story or novella.

I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS. Review is postponed until I can think clearly.

I’m a little sad. This book sounded very promising with the same yet different town, and all. But then there’s no use of indication when someone is speaking. Dialogues were sparse and a little clunky, which I first thought was just cause Odile was shy and clunky. But I’m also missing some development- and you’re telling me she just fit her 16-yo-self’s clothes 20 years later, no biggy? Come on, Scott
