This book offers a fresh perspective on time travel--it makes you question what you might do if your life was constantly (re)unfolding a mere valley away. I enjoyed the mental gymnastics this book put me through, but I wasn't prepared for the first part to read like a YA book. I think that is my biggest hang up, and the fact that it felt like nothing was happening for the majority of the book.

4.5 rounded to 5. Definitely a book that will stick with me for a bit. The book takes place in a valley and on either side are identical valleys, one set 20 years into the future and the other 20 years in the past. Travel between the valleys is highly regulated by a conseil and only allowed in extenuating circumstances because of the impact it could have on the towns. The whole concept felt very unique, but even without the dystopian and time-travel aspects, it would still be a thought provoking book because of the main character Odile and her development throughout the novel. It was so well-written, and I loved the contrast between the two parts. It’s not 5 stars for me because the lack of quotation marks took a while to get used to and the ending left me a little confused (but could be intentionally ambiguous).

Plot heavy but slow paced and focused on character development. Excellent speculative fiction with some mindfuckery at the end

It was *just* okay. I found my thoughts wandering off elsewhere when reading it and once I put the book down and then went back to reading it, I just couldn’t remember what had happened up until that point. The premise of three vallies with different timelines sounded so good but it wasn’t what I was expecting. Again, not a bad book, just a bit boring.
