Odile is a shy quiet girl competing for a spot on the very desirable Conseil. It’s not an easy task, and it’s very competitive. But when Odile sees something she shouldn’t, this changes the course of everything. Sworn to secrecy, but it eats her up inside because the fate of one of the only people she truly cares about, Edme, is about to change, and she can’t do a single thing, but let the nature of the valley take its course. The concept of this novel was so good, and left the reader excited about two valleys in different times, with an interesting sounding time travel plot; it just didn’t read as such. This ended up being a slog to get through; the writing was dense and clunky, which made trying to figure out and follow the plot hard and confusing. The reader understood that Odile had seen something she wasn’t supposed to, but they never quite grasped the time travel aspect. It was never truly fleshed out well enough for them. They weren’t quite sure what this world was like, or what happened here. We were probably supposed to learn as Odile did with the classes, but it never set in enough and so the reader never got the context to Odile’s secret. So because of that, this novel felt like a disappointment. We also never really felt connected to the characters. Odile was rounded out to a degree in which we sort of understood her, and the reader felt for her, but there was never a true connection. Edme and all the kids she went to school with felt so secondary, just placements for the plot. Even in the second half, which is probably the part the reader struggled with the most, as they didn’t quite get the time jump, none of the characters felt like they had substance. This could just be this reader and the way this was written wasn’t for them. This reader really wanted to like this, unfortunately it just didn’t quite work out.
