I loved the concept of valleys that physically border their past and future, and what that means for travel between them. And the overall plot was fine. But the book felt pretentious for the sake of it—the lack of quotation marks and the general French-ness of it all added nothing to the themes of the book, that I could tell. I also didn't think the entire "Odile is the only woman in the guards" theme was done well. Almost three stars for an interesting premise and almost interesting plot.

Such a cool concept and wonderfully written. I’m impressed by how well Howard made the story work and how he was able to put so much emotion into it. I really enjoyed this novel—it asked philosophical questions in quite a unique way. Really looking forward to seeing where his writing career goes from this.
