If you have been a fan of this series, you better buckle in. So much happens in this story, not just in terms of Pet's adventures but also in character growth and overall world development. And yet there is obviously much more to come.

All of our favorite characters are back and making an appearance. All of our fan theories are tested. All of our ships are... well, I'll just let you read it for yourself ;). And the ending? I can't remember the last time I have been so proud of a character. My emotions ran high and I am honestly so pumped for everyone else to read it.

So, if you haven't started the series yet, why not?!

I have provided an honest review after receiving an eARC from the author.

Australian fun

Charming, hilarious, confusing and magical - this is a bit of all of them, plus a dash of mystery. Things are moving and Pet is in the thick of it, like always.

Between Frames was another awesome addition to this series! It's book four in the City Between series and while there's some recaps, I'd still definitely recommend starting with book one.

Pet is back along with her three psychos and this time they're investigating a recent string of fae murders. There's so much going on in this book. There's some enlightening reveals. Lots of interesting information is brought up. And then, the ending! Argh! Why? I need the next book now!

At the beginning of this series, JinYeong was my least favorite character. But with each progressive book, I've liked him more and more. To the point that with this book, he's become my absolute favorite. His snark is hilarious. The way him and Pet bicker back and forth, their teasing, the way they push each other's buttons, is so amusing. I can't get enough of him now.

This is quickly becoming my favorite series and this installment further cemented that fact. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys urban fantasy.

Pet and her psychos are back. Zero and his crew are investigating a series of murders where a fae rips out the heart of another fae.

“Well,” I said, allowing the indignation to creep into my voice, “how come you’re so flamin’ suspicious, then?”
“Experience,” Zero said, unperturbed.

Zero is the leader, tough and distant. Pet knows that he’s the biggest and baddest of the crew, so he’s the go to when danger comes.

A step behind him was Athelas, fae steward and tea drinker. If Zero’s roar could shake you to your bones with fear, Athelas could seep a chill into your bones with the softness of his voice.

Athelas is softer but not necessarily kinder. He’s got a habit of dropping enough information to keep Pet interested, for his own interests obviously.

“You’re getting in the way of my view,” I said sourly.
His Korean edged with Between, JinYeong said, very clearly, “I am the view.”

JinYeong is the vampire who Pet (and Athelas) love to irritate. He speaks Korean even though he knows English, but Pet is better at understanding him since he is letting the Between translate when he feels like it. And Pet is getting better at Listening.

Pet can seem a little ignorant - she lived alone squatting at her house from 13 to 17 with no education and her dialogue is loaded with slang. But Pet is clever and kind. She has a heart for people who are in trouble.

“Nah, this dead bloke was walking around, buying smokes.”
“He what?”
“He was at the cigarette counter, buying cigarettes. His name’s Cameron Michaels, according to his ID.”
“That makes absolutely no sense, Pet.”
“You’re telling me! What kind of Behindkind smokes cigarettes? I didn’t think their lungs were even the same as ours. I know their blood’s not.”
“Talking with you is a rollercoaster, you know that?”

Pet trusts in her owners integrity, especially Zero, so she’s really disappointed with him by the end of this one. I can’t wait to see what happens in book 5.

There’s no romance in this series. But I’m really starting to ship Pet and JinYeoung. They love to aggravate each other and it reminds me of a boy tugging on the pigtail of the girl he likes more than actual dislike. She’s learning Korean simply to spite him.

Mwoh?”
“Well, he scared off the Sandman last time,” I pointed out. “Me and Daniel had to fight flaming hard to get away, but JinYeong just sorta snarled at him and he left.”
Ne,” said JinYeong, his poise returning to him. He sat back with his biscuit and coffee, almost impossibly smug, and said to the other two, “I am the best choice.”
“I am at a loss for words,” said Athelas. “Our pet, choosing JinYeong’s company first!”
“Yes,” Zero said, still frowning. “Very interesting.”
Athelas sipped his tea. “Insulting, I would have said.”
“See,” I said to JinYeong. “They don’t like you, either.” JinYeong shrugged, but his mouth was still smug.

There is far more development with JinYeoung than with Zero - who is distant and brooding. Athelas is more like an uncle figure - even though Pet likes Athelas, she doesn’t trust him after the events of the last book. But I’m perfectly content to see where the story goes without rushing a romance.

This series is best read in order, but the author does try to help you out if you start out of order.

If you’re looking for a unique urban fantasy - this is a really good one. Each book has its own investigation and builds on the previous one.

Oh, things are picking up! We get insight as to what the psychos' deals are and it enlightens so many little elements in the previous books, and it all gets topped up not only with Pet learning the ropes probably much faster than any of the psychos expected her to learn (never underestimate humans, methinks), but that ending? Very satisfying, because as much as I like the dynamic between Pet and the psychos, I feel like everyone's development is moving in the right direction.

(You know, I was planning on reading the first 5 books and the rest later, but I'm starting to wonder if that will even be possible.)

Trying to decide if this book truly wasn't as good as the previous one, or if I just need to space out my reading of them. When I read 2 back to back, I don't enjoy the second one as much.

That said, there were genuine plot elements I didn't care for as much in this book. Several elements don't make a lot of sense to me - perhaps will be explained later in the series?
Spoiler How does Daniel know more about Behindkind monsters than the Fae? How does he hear news of the Troika (including their name) so quickly? Why is Pet so insistent on visiting Daniel and Morgana even when she knows Zero disapproves? (This one I know the answer- because the plot demands it. But no plausible reason is given in the book).

We learn several important details about the backstory to the overarching plotline - not quite what I was expecting, not my favorite kind of plot.

The tension between Pet and her owners ramps up quite a bit in this book - the way the author is handling this is.... well I suppose its a very YA approach to the situation but again, not one I particularly enjoy reading (angst! Emotional drama!).

The library doesn't have any more of these books. I likely will continue with the series, later, when I have finished sulking that its turning into something very different than I expected.
