I feel bad giving this two stars because Vivid is such a great character. I want to be Vivid’s best friend. I just hate the hero so much I was actively rooting for her to dump him. He is a misogynist, never apologizes for his ignorant views, never really acknowledges that she is a real doctor. Also the power relationships are so bad. He is her boss, owns her house and pops into her house without her consent. So this is a relationship with no power balance whatsoever. It made me think less of Vivid that she fell for his act. I liked Vivid’s journey to becoming a doctor but I hope Nate jumped off a cliff.

WOW!

I listened to this audiobook via my library. I was in need of something that I knew I would enjoy and that would also have some depth and female lead I would love. And Ms. Bev always delivers! Vivid is a female doctor during a time when it was not only not common but even frowned on. But she has the personality and strength of character to make it successfully in these times. This was a hot and sultry romance with lots of steaming sexytimes. But I also liked the way that we got to know the characters and the small town- Grayson Grove. It was fun seeing Nate and Vivid get to know and annoy one another. Each of the characters had distinct personalities. I do, however, wish that the subplot with the girls were either expanded in some way or just taken out, I am not sure if it was completely necessary.
Jenkins is an author that I have yet to be disappointed with and I wholeheartedly recommend her to everyone.

This was my first Beverly Jenkins and it certainly won’t be my last. Just phenomenal story-telling, world building, character development, the whole bit. People talk a lot about world building in PNR or fantasy or sci-fi genres but I have to say the rich details of post Civil War era in Michigan was just amazing and such a beautiful learning experience. I loved every word of this book, from the incredibly vivid (sorry, couldn’t help it) characters, to the action packed plot, to the incredibly sexy love scenes. This book was a treasure, much like the author. I can’t wait to dive into more of her books.
