This book is pithy and quirky, with a lot of humor, which I mostly enjoyed. Certain parts dragged for me, and I felt that the author gave a lot of extraneous details which, while interesting, were maybe not super relevant to the story. Honestly, the part I enjoyed the most was the epilogue, where the author tied everything back to present day. I also enjoyed that the author tied the story in with historical events happening at the same time, as I think it gave the book important context. Additionally, I think the author sometimes looked at things through too much of a 21st-century lens. Overall, I found this an interesting and compelling biography of someone who played an important role in American history.

Audio, 3.5 rounded up. I think I chose the wrong medium for this; while I tend to grasp onto nonfiction pretty well in audio formats, my mind wandered considerably during the text. There were strong parts - the maddening Comstock! - that ultimately guided me through.
