“you don’t know what you have felt: you have to see it in front of you, in others, in order to recognise it and know it…It lies dormant in you, and you can’t name it; then all at once, it is there.”

I was luck enough to read this volume very soon after finishing Christoper Isherwood's "Goodbye to Berlin", which recounts stories of living in Berlin at the same time as Elias Canetti's second autobiographical volume. It's such a gift to be told about that time and that world by two such different but amazingly gifted writers! The power of the written word is overwhelming.
