An excellent work by Edith Hamilton that captures much of the essence of Western myths and their storytelling traditions. Hamilton’s clear-eyed perspective especially in the introduction, where she thoughtfully discusses the tone, habits, and intentions of various poets and playwrights who passed down these myths. The most famous myths — like those of the Olympians, heroes, and tragic figures — are given more depth and detail, while others, especially the blended or more obscure ones are down by a hurry. As with any collection of myth and legend, some tales are simply more compelling and better told than others. One of the most delightful aspects of the book is Hamilton’s exploration of how the concept of gods evolved — tracing the shift from the divine figures of earlier civilizations to the more human-like gods of Greco-Roman mythology and the more mortal like, fate-bound Norse gods who seem to carry less divinity and more doom

A very accessible look at classical mythology. Details that make some of the stories more captivating were left out in lieu of presenting the stories as concisely as possible given different accounts over time.

The author did a great job in describing the voices and views of the original poets and their audiences while retelling their works.

In this classic on Greek Mythology, Edith Hamiliton shows her love and respect for classic Greek mythology by drawing on many sources from Homer, Hesoid, Ovid, various plays, and minor poets to ambitiously retell the entire story of Greek mythology in an accessible way, and she succeeded!

I love the sheer amount of information, but told in a very simple style that still has plenty of meat with it. I just love how she conveys the events so well. I would give this book to someone who was new to Greek mythology, it is just so packed full of information.

I really adored this book, and it is easily one of my favorite collections of Greek myths. Any fan of Greek myths needs to read this!

As a junior in high school in my 4th year of Latin, I was thrilled when my English teacher assigned this book as required reading. I loved the unit we did on this book. It’s another I wouldn’t have picked up to read on my own, but I’m so glad I read it! Having the Greek, Roman, and Norse mythological context this book provides has helped me understand so many references in movies, TV, books, and music I otherwise may have missed. Every high schooler should have to read this book!

Tends to be a bit of a slog. Will try again in audiobook format.

Good overview/intro but doesn’t add all the details that make these stories so special

I've read a lot of the stories from plays, and my favorite was Antigone. A tale of honor and sacrifice.
