The author clearly wanted to tell two stories: to answer what makes a celebrity and about Sarah Bernhardt. Because of this, this felt more like a biography of Sarah Bernardt than an examination of celebrity. So I do think there is some false advertising in the book's synopsis. The parts about celebrity were well-written and insightful, but there was not enough of that to make this book about what it means to be a celebrity. If you are looking for something on stars and celebrity culture, read Jeannine Basinger or Anne Helen Peterson.
