This was a doozy of a book. So unexpected and weird! But it was a fun little adventure. It’s short and fast paced. But the characters and story don’t suffer for it. I felt a connection with the characters, as varied as they are. The writing and descriptions are so lush I could easily picture everything, even the hippos.

Really enjoyable read! All of the characters were well-developed, unique and incredibly fun to get to know. I especially liked the idea of a group of people who would have been incredibly marginalized in the 1890s were able to have this epic adventure. Openly trans and queer characters were normalized, fat characters experienced no fat phobia and were portrayed as desirable, and almost all the characters were POC. The plot was engaging and playful but was still treated with the utmost sincerity.

This is a great book for those fond of westerns, cowboys, vigilante justice, historical fiction, and ambiguous characters.

My only criticism of this book is that the reviews led me to believe it was funnier than it was or that it was more explicit in queer romance scenes. I also found it a little slower to get into, but by chapter three I was totally hooked.

All together, this novella screams SOCIAL ACTIVIST TRYING TOO HARD.

This concept is phenomenal, one that really set the book up for success, but unfortunately it fell apart.
It started strong, but unravelled with every added character. A bisexual cowboy? Sure.
A gender fluid character using non-binary pronouns in the 19th century Gulf Coast? You've lost me. But wait! Now there's a pregnant, lesbian, contract killer who "hopes to never see a hammer in action."
In addition to my suspense of disbelief being stretched so thin for this time period novel, I couldn't attach myself to the characters. I didn't care whether they lived or died because I felt no real connection to them.
Also, no mention of slavery, discrimination, or anything else that definitely existed.
All together, this novella screams SOCIAL ACTIVIST TRYING TOO HARD.
What's the politically correct, gender neutral term for massively disappointed?

This could've been something great.
