Read as part of Dr. Briana Whiteside's Octavia Bulter Mixtape class on Substack and TikTok. Butler's prose in Wild Seed is as poignant and direct as always. At times, I felt nearly as trapped as Anyanwu in the gripping and unrelenting narrative. I can see how this book sets the stage for the rest of the Patternist series and I'm looking forward to diving into them soon.

This book was so good! What Octavia Butler is saying about race and gender using her two main characters is beyond the possibilities of even the best mainstream novels.

This just did not happen for me. Liked Butler's Xenogenesis series, but this fantasy, superhero extravaganza after the first 50 pages never engaged me. Too bad but just 2 stars.
