Mixed feelings on this book. I appreciate the rich and interesting characters, but was not as happy with the storyline.

My first Octavia Butler book - excellent pacing, prose and world building with complex characters. I did struggle with the darkness of the plot though. In my eyes Doro is irredeemable and reading chapters from his POV was not enjoyable for me. I will definitely be picking up another Butler book, either a stand-alone or a different series.

I had a realllllly hard time with this book. I was interested in the story but I don't know, I couldn't get into it. I stopped and picked it up many times over the past year+. Eventually, I went ahead and borrowed the audiobook so I could finish it. Not my favorite of OB's works, but a very intriguing story and idea nonetheless.

I read this book years ago but recently listened to an audio version. What an interesting concept - the idea of living for hundreds, even thousands of years appeals to some but it has always seemed burdensome to me. But to become dolphin or a bird for a season for example - what joy!

Well this is... huh. This is different. It doesn't end so much as grind to a halt, and it messes with your expectations of how a story like this should go. The benevolent Anyanwu butts head with the indestructbile creepy pervert eugenicist Doro for centuries. You expect
Spoilerthat eventually she will triumph over the asshole, destroying him through some fiendishly clever plan,
, but that never happens. Instead,
Spoilershe makes the best of an impossible situation, resisting him with her quiet strength and eventually just... compromising and making him be reasonably nice to her and her immediate family.

Hrm. So it's not exactly satisfying, but I respect a story that jerks you around like that.
