What a crazy ride. I absolutely loved this, start to finish. I was not expecting such an engaging fantasy when I started this, very interesting eugenic stuff, definitely recommend it.

As always, Butler’s writing is smooth and easy to read but does not at all grip me. The book centers on Anyanwu and Doro, two immortal characters with rather different takes on their immortality, and the breeding and maintenance of communities of misfits with various magical abilities. The immortal nature of the main characters and the breeding program that was Doro’s sole focus in life meant that the story was a revolving door of secondary characters, and I struggled to see any compelling plot line running through.
Woooooo boy. I practically devoured the last 75% in one whole day. I was intrigued the whole time. I hated who I wanted to hate up until the very end. Still a great read. The characters were interesting enough for me though my annoyance with the constant submission being done and played out for so long was palpable. Still loved it!
Butler continually expands my notions of what sci-fi can be.

Not my favorite, but solidified that I should be reading more Octavia Butler.
This was excellent. The character work is done very well and the fantastical elements are woven seamlessly into the story. My only question is why A remained in America...
The book was amazing for everything it intended to be. I did not actually enjoy reading it. It was a hard read.
