I suspect that that this would have felt a lot more revolutionary had I read it when it was published in 1980. I'm curious if Butler would have ended it differently if she had published it more recently.

From beginning to end the book was an engaging and wild ride. The main characters are complex and their relationship to each other even more so. The last few chapters were a little rushed in my opinion but it was definitely an interesting read and start to the series. Can’t wait to read the next!

Incredible story. Review to come.

Wow! Unputdownable. This book will wrap itself around your brain with its well-made characters and ethical dilemmas. It’s violent, but not repulsive, sinister, psychological, but also a deeply human journey as the two immortal characters of Doro and Anyanwu love, hate and battle each other through the centuries. There are so many layers to this story, I don’t want to give more details and ruin the experience.

I’ve never read anything like it. I’ll definitely be reading more from Ms. Butler.

Audible notes: Robin Miles is a goddess.

The most interesting thing about this book is the power dynamic - two effectively immortal people with different powers and priorities attempting to establish dominance over the other (or, really, be allowed to do what they want) - the science-fiction element helps drive the question of what gives a person agency to its limits in a way that contemporary/historical fiction would not be able to.
