I read this book in two chunks, separated by a few months and it was two very different experiences. I started this book in the midst of a bad reading slump and really struggled with it, despite it being up my street. I revisited it recently to read the second half now that I'm free of the slump, and what a difference — I stormed through it!

I loved this. You could really feel the friendship between Holmes and Watson (which you don't always get in pastiches) and their voices were perfectly captured. I thought the way that the Dracula story was incorporated was brilliant and Dracula and Mina were really enjoyable characters on the page. I'm excited to learn more about the vampire mythos in this world as the series progresses. It was also a good mix of mysteries I was able to puzzle out and ones that Ib was surprised by. The reference to Raffles was an unexpected surprise (I've been reading Mr Justice Raffles alongside) and I hope that we may get to encounter Raffles and Bunny in a later book.
