Quality of the stories varied wildly. Some were breathtaking, but a few just went on and on and on...

no offense to floridians, but still in favor of gathering enough folks around the border of florida armed with shovels n spades. counting to three, then casting the humid earthen state out into the atlantic.

Easily one of the best short story collections I’ve read all year and definitely ranks among my all-time favorites. As a native Floridian, I may have a unique appreciation for this collection, but Groff’s masterful depiction of the state will resonate with anyone. Her vivid descriptions—like the oppressive humidity and the lingering smell of soap in a summer bathroom—capture Florida with a poetic precision that I’ve often felt but never managed to express so beautifully. The stories themselves are incredibly written exploring themes like loneliness and the conflicts of motherhood with a nuanced touch that avoids being overly heavy. Groff’s writing is poetic, soft, and humorously poignant. It was tough to choose favorites, but "For the God of Love, For the Love of God," "Above and Below," and "Dogs Go Wolf" stood out to me. Truly, her prose is nothing short of perfection.

Lauren Groff’s Florida is one of the best books I’ve read over the last several years.

A collection of short stories set in the state or, in a few cases, featuring characters trying to escape from it, Florida is relentless in its study of human nature.

Pitting the dangers found in the state’s unique landscape against the those completely man made, Groff shows that humans are often scarier than any python or alligator can be.

3.5. “Of all the places in the world, she belongs in Florida. How dispiriting, to learn this of herself.”
