For fans of Arcane this is the perfect book. It fills in a lot of the gaps in the black rose storyline, and provides a lot of context as to why Ambessa is the way she is.
I enjoyed that we got a lot of Ambessa’s personal perspectives and thoughts about her actions and how she justified them. She is a much more complex character in this book that is much more fleshed out than the show bothers to address. I felt like there was enough time for me to get to know her as a character in for me to understand her relationships with the other characters in this book as well. I especially appreciated, Ambassa and Rictus and their friendship together.
Rell was also an unexpected character that I didn’t think I would like as much as I ended up enjoying. She serves a very specific purpose, being the complete opposite of Mel, and just heightens the contrast between who Ambessa wishes her biological daughter was, and who she envisions as the heir of the Medarda clan.<
I did like the random coming-of-age romance plot between Raul and Torah but I did think it was kind of random? I’m not upset about it at all, just kind of different when everything else is so heavy and combat focused. I really hope that the show continues Rell’s storyline and that we get to see her and Mel meet in the future. I can see them playing out the storyline, where Rell attempts to avenge Ambessa’s death in the show.
Having this insight also helped me to better understand Mel and her intentions throughout the Arcane series. The relationship between and Ambessa and Mel is such a huge focus in this book and I really enjoyed that.
Ijust wish there was more storyline!! I wish that we had gotten more information as to what Ambessa did after she sent Mel away.
Other than that this book had some great representation of a cute coming of age, queer relationship, as well as a character, who uses they/them pronouns throughout the series, without any real mention, or acknowledgement of it, which I really appreciated and enjoyed.
