that was okay. vasya’s character was mysterious & mildly otherworldly at the expense of being well developed. a solid read but i don’t have interest in what happens next.

For probably obvious reasons, this strongly reminded me of Spinning Silver. I loved the feel of a story told by the fire on a long, cold winter's night, as well as the glimpse into the conflict between traditional Russian folklore and the Eastern Orthodox Church and a period of Russian history rarely addressed. Plus Morozko, like the Unseelie of the Dresden Files, scratches that "power unfathomable by mortals that sometimes looks a lot like evil" itch. Will definitely be continuing.

DNF. I loved the setting but I just couldn't get into the story.

I liked it more than I thought I would! I also don't know much about Russian folklore, so I learned a lot.

I picked this book because it is a cold winter and it promised stories by the fire. And, at first, it felt like my grandmother was narrating bed time stories. The writing was excellent and the whole atmosphere dreamy and cozy. However, the story quickly left the dream land and got a bit boring. And then, a bit scary (I seriously can't handle scary stuff and I had just finished the drama "Kingdom" so I was in no mood for zombies). Still, part of the scary scenes and creatures, the dull story and the alteration in the writing style, the characters were interesting and I loved how dark they could be sometimes. And the story, from the princess' fairytale got darker and darker by chapter. However, I did skim read most of the book to get to the end.
