This is a really fun approach to the history of the Revolutionary War in Orange County NY. There is a side story of romance that is unnecessary (innocent, but just seems extra). And the back of the book talks about ghosts in such a way that Caleb asked me to read it to make sure it wasn't going to be too scary. The ghosts are more like characters that come from that past to talk to the main character in her 1950's setting.
Loved it! Funny and witty with great characters. Part of my 8th graders curriculum. We looked forward to reading it everyday and did not want it to end. Highly recommend.
A delightful book. I read it to the kids and we finished quite a bit ahead of schedule because we didn't want to put it down.
lighthearted
I loved this!!!!!! Very fun with ghosts and I really liked the concept
“A gentleman can hardly continue to sit,' he explained, in his serenest and most level voice, 'when he asks a very remarkable young lady to do him the honor of marrying him. And - 'he somehow contrived to grin at me wickedly, 'I usually get what I want, Miss Grahame,' he added, and pitched over in a tangled heap on the floor.”
This was a lovely light read involving friendly helpful ghosts and 3 charming love stories. I would have been so captivated had I read this as a young teen. I was pretty captivated as an adult. I would recommend this for any romantic teen who loves innocent love stories and history. Peaceable Sherwood was a wonderful character who provided a good portion of the gentle humor in this tale. He reminded me of Geoffrey Delavale in Patricia Veryan's [b:Journey to Enchantment|271159|Journey to Enchantment (The Golden Chronicles, #2)|Patricia Veryan|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1227221405l/271159._SY75_.jpg|1580165].

After reading a couple pages, I really wasn't sure I would like it and if it would grab me. But pretty much from then on I was totally sucked in. I absolutely love the way the multiple stories are told, bringing two stories that occur a couple hundred years apart together in a way that is so fun to read. The characters are so great - full and lifelike - the writing is economical and sufficiently intriguing (highly clever at times, and just overall enjoyable), and this book contains (SLIGHT SPOILER) what has got to be the single best proposal scene in all of literature. Oh my. Yes.
One of the best books in the entire universe, in my 12-18 year old self's mind, and while I'm not sure I'd go that far, I do have to give it pretty high marks as a short but evocative historical romance. I really do love it a lot.
Honestly, if I all I had known about this book was its premise I probably would have disregarded it as silly and never read it. However, it was written by Elizabeth Marie Pope and as I love The Perilous Gard I gave it a go. And I am so glad I did.
The book is about a girl named Peggy who has just been orphaned and comes to live with her uncle at her family's ancestral estate in upstate New York. During her first meeting with her uncle he loses his temper and kicks out a perfectly nice young man who has assisted Peggy in reaching her home. After this less than auspicious beginning Peggy is promptly ignored and becomes lonely as she wanders about with no direction or companions. Into this loneliness enter four ghosts from her family's past from the time of the Revolutionary War. As they share thier stories Peggy's present situation begins to take on new and interesting forms.
I was suprised at how much I loved this book and how engrossed I became in the lives of the characters, particularly the four dead ones. The historical setting was genuine and interesting. It makes the reader think of the Revolutionary War in terms of the lives living it rather than the battles and dates that have historically marked it.
The character of Peaceable Sherwood is my number one reason for falling in love with the book though. I love characters who are conniving, snarky and charismatic and he has it all. If you enjoy reading characters like The Scarlet Pimpernel, Gen from the Queen's Thief series and Lord Peter you will enjoy reading this.
Overall, I found The Perilous Gard to be the better of the two but this one is definitely a keeper as well. I am sad that there are no more books by Elizabeth Marie Pope to discover. Why did she only write two books?????
