ok i actually finished this on like the 13th but it was really good !! & i liked how you didn’t automatically see the ending right from the start. i also loved how we got to see what really happened w ginny’s dad :( this was a really good mystery book

3.5 stars.
This book just didn’t draw me in. I couldn’t care less about the characters and the plot/ writing just fell flat for me. I could have DNF’ed it at any point in the story and not thought about it again. Just a pretty meh book. Not the worst I’ve read, but definitely not the best.

I can’t help but compare this to A Good Girls Guide to Murder and it’s just not nearly on the same level. The characters weren’t all that interesting. Even our main character, Monica. The best chapters imo were the 5 year flashbacks with Jen and Ethan. Most interesting to read and I thought they were the best characters.
Plot wise the mystery was just “meh”. Their (Monica and Ginny) quote unquote sleuthing was mostly talking to people that they met up with in coffee shops. Also there wasn’t really much in the way of actual suspects. Where as in AGGGTM I felt like I was guessing along with Pip about who may have done the crime, in this book there wasn’t the feeling of strongly believing the killer was so and so and then new info makes you think it’s someone else and so on. The actual reveal of the killer I honestly thought was supposed to be comedic it was so unbelievable. I was expecting the accused to incredulously ask her “you can’t really think I did it?!?” And then Monica feeling foolish for freaking out like she did. But no he actually just was the killer

I'm back on my YA murder mystery fiction bullshit and I flew through this and the sequel. I really liked the story, and genuinely was seeking the ending to speed up which says something about the page-turning-ness of it all. It wasn't too convoluted until right at the end, which was a stretch. Worth a read if you like a twist or a ridiculous and slightly silly murder mystery that has some heart and reflection hidden behind what looks like a very basic plot of a CW show.
