i really liked jared, he was a really wonderful character and i got teared up near the end during the AA meeting part, however i really struggled to get into this book. it wasnt very plot driven, i feel like it ended at the halfway mark of a much longer book and it was just very explicit for my taste in reading :/ its just not my kind of book

It was kind of hard for me to get through the first half, but best believe I was enraptured when things started to kick up. I really started to understand why this book was so lauded after the first 50%. Not to say that the first half of the book was bad, just that I felt a kind of disconnect from what was happening and what the summary led me to expect.

I've been meaning to read this book for a while and I'm so glad I finally did! Once I started reading, I couldn't put the book down. What an amazing story. It's so many things all at once. You just feel for Jared and this crappy life he's living and trying to make the best of. I just want to hug him and give him a stable place to call home. All of the characters are great and well-rounded, even the ones you don't really like. I can't wait to read more of this series.

This was a really great book that took some unexpected turns. It was well-written and the characters were strongly developed and balanced. The conclusion left me a bit adrift but not in a bad way. I think this is a unique, Canadian novel and I highly recommend it.

I liked the concept mixing of indigenous culture and folklore with the western folklore of witches, seeing ghosts and magic. Yet, the teen story mixed with sick literature reads like other stories that I have rad before. Overall a mixed story that I did and didn't enjoy.

Having seen the Trickster show before this, I thought I would learn more from the book. However, the narrative is so mind-numbingly slow and little happens until 75% of the way in. The ultra-dimensional beings and ghosts are fun but this story doesn't focus on them until much later.

No idea if I will pick up the next in the series, but it's not going to be for a while. This may be the first time where I recommend the adaptation over the original.

Floppy narration, the only interesting section (around page 240) was cut short. Other than that the dialogue is extremely unnatural, the description is entirely lacking, and the character relationships feel off.
