this was the first work that I’ve read by this author, and I really enjoyed it for the most part!! Briana is a strong and smart character. I loved the depiction of Jacob’s social anxiety and his ways of managing it. . He was also such a sweet love interest. I was really invested in their connection and the natural progression of their feelings in the first half of the book. It was towards the end of the book that it all turned a bit sour for me.
I didn’t like that their first kiss happened in the midst of Jacob having a panic attack. The unplanned pregnancy plot also threw me for a loop since it caused a ton of miscommunication due to Briana’s previous trauma. It didn’t feel fully worked through or flushed out since it was rushed in the end.
Overall, I enjoyed the majority of the book and will be thinking about the love letters they sent each other

Yours Truly by Abby Jimenez is the second in a series. I purchased and read the first Book of the Month Selection, Part of Your World, in 2022. So, naturally when BOTM published the second book in 2023, I snapped it up quickly. And just like the first, this story did not disappoint. As I mentioned before, Jimenez's books are romcoms with substance. She does an delicate job of balancing sobering topics with timely humor and bringing it all together for a satisfying conclusion.

The second book in this series focuses on the best friend, Dr. Bri Ortiz, of the main character in the first. We meet Bri, ER doctor, on the tail end of a humiliating divorce where she's trying to regain her self-worth while also attempting to beat the clock on finding a kidney donor for her brother. As it so happens in many romcoms, a timely meet-cute (or maybe in this instance meet-conflict) ensues with one Dr. Jacob Maddox who is equally good-looking as he is good-hearted and who also happens to be on the heels of a horrible break-up. To boot, he just so happens to have recently joined the ER staff at Bri's hospital. As it were, one thing leads to another and these professional colleagues move past their initial conflict and strike up a friendship through a situational fake dating scenario.

With this being a romcom, I don't think I'd be giving to much away to say the story follows a friends-to-lovers plotline. However, that is not the jewel of Jimenez's book. In both of the books in this series, she tackles serious issues such as depression, anxiety, loss of pregnancy and thoughts of suicide. She artfully presents these in a thoughtful way while not weighing the book (or the reader!) down too much. (Hint: Think Grey's Anatomy but in book form.)

Recommendation: I truly enjoy Jimenez's writing style, and I can't honestly say if I loved this book more than the first. They are both equally engaging on their own. The books do follow in chronological order; however, I believe they can be consumed as stand-alone stories, with some character overlap in each. So, it is my reader's opinion, that it is not necessary to read them in order. I highly recommend picking up either copy today.

Until next time ... Read on!

Regardless of whether I purchase a book, borrow a book, or receive a book in exchange for review, my ultimate goal is to be honest, fair, and constructive. I hope you've found this review helpful.

I looooved the first half of this book. I couldn't stop recommending it. But the second half flopped for me. I wanted to slap the main character, but perhaps I'm being too harsh. Still worth it. Protect Jacob at all costs.

Amazing romcom. Takes on the fake dating trope in such a fresh way and also in a way that goes deep. There were so many small moments that I loved and the love story was so tender. A great representation not only in terms of race, but also mental health, second-chance romance, and when you add the full cast of characters, also sexuality, race, health issues, family and more. Also!!! THE MINNESOTA REFERENCES! I love!

Ok more things I loved with some spoilers:
  • The part about being “teleported” …. When someone you trust and love carries you to bed after you fall asleep not in bed. And to see it from Jacobs point of view and not understanding Brianna’s sleepy comment about it made me scream! So sweet.
  • I didn’t *love* when it felt like the miscommunication trope was going to be so much of the plot but it *did* add the necessary tension for them to be real with each other and actually fall in love
  • Also … the pregnancy. I almost stopped reading. I hate pregnancies in romcoms. But I liked that this one talked about fear and it provided representation for people that have miscarried.
  • The one bed trope was done so well! It kind of felt like the author was making fun of herself by mentioning it as a romcom trope in an earlier scene, but when it actually happened the simplicity and small moments of love made it feel so much more real and tender
  • Such a great cast of characters that were so fully formed and funny!
  • Loved that one of the biggest aspects of Brianna’s personality / story is being a caring big sister.
  • Had a moment of fear that Benny wasn’t going to survive but I’m so glad he ended up thriving!
  • The story opens with her being stuck and feeling like her life has fallen apart. And even once she falls in love and Jacob is in love with her, she still feels broken and still has a lot of trauma to address. I think this was so important. It was so relatable. I love that even with the happily ever after in reach she wasn’t feeling it. Her happiness had to come from herself too. But also the line from Jacob about us being “mosaics full of broken pieces” but all of that is what makes us who we are and who we are is beautiful and worthy of love.
  • One more shoutout for all the Minnesota references. I LOLed when the mentioned living in Edina and Minnetonka hahaha  BUT the timeline didn’t always make sense because there was a pool party near the start but the wedding was in July and a “few months away” … it would be too cold for a pool party if it wasn’t June-august lol.

Ok review over. Loved and will read more from this author!

Clarification: I put yes in “flaws” but I wouldn’t characterize their personalities and hardships as flaws. But it is a main part of the story and how they come together.
