Super weird but I loved it. Definitely the kind of horror that you think about a lot. I have seen people compare it to Frankenstein but I would say it is similar but it is a much more intimate type of story and is much more sympathetic to the monster - in Frankenstein, the monster is not inherently evil but becomes that way due to rejection whereas Monstrilio is unapolegetically non-human and his family struggle but ultimatley due try to accept and understand him.

Very interesting exploration of grief, family, life and death. but I will say I found most of the human characters very annoying, especially Magos, Monstrilio's mother.

Eerie, sad, and beautifully written. I’ll be thinking about this for a while.

Really loved the originality and honesty! It's very vulnerable and raw and doesn't shy away from the ugliness that emotion can be.
I think I have a lot more feelings, but they're not ready to be written yet.

I was quite torn with this one. Overall, I enjoyed it as a dark, weird story although I did find the pace a bit slow. But in line with other reviews, I agree that it could have been so much more especially in terms of how it ended. On the one hand, I think that if you're looking for an exploration of grief, especially child loss, the ending may be an appropriate closure and not necessarily be disappointing. On the other hand, if like myself, you were anticipating a more dark, unhinged, disturbing type of horror story based on the brief synoposis on the back cover, you might be a bit disappointed with the ending and overall progression.

I also think that it may have been more effective for the author to switch perspectives of characters throughout the book in shorter increments of time, instead of only seeing the perspectives of Magos, Lena, Joseph, and M once in four main sections over extended periods. I think that this would have been a way to add more to the story. It could have been especially interesting to have seen more of Monstrilio's perspective when he was young and wild before having to evolve and become more contained/human-like.

so happy i chose this as my first read of the year. absolutely gorgeously written yet unpretentious. never thought a character that
eats people
would have my heart as much as monstrilio, but there you go.
