I liked the first half of the book, but the second half lost me. I suppose I was expecting more of a grief monster and this wound up being a sort of coming of (monstrous) age. The time skip after Lena's chapters stopped me short, though the very last few chapters made up for what I thought I'd lost at the start of Joseph's chapters.

Wow, I’m so glad I gave this a chance because I loved this much more than I was expecting. The loss and grief of losing a child, its impact and aftermath on a family, and what defines a human and family. I loved how each part was broken down from each person’s POV. I loved M’s raw and vulnerable M’s character was with dealing with becoming human, but ultimately choosing himself and not denying who he is. I loved his growth as a blob, monster, human, monster again. I really liked Papi and Mami’s relationship as parents and how they tried so hard to hold onto Santiago to finally accepting M and letting him go. I think M actually helped them process their grief and bring them together.

I can’t believe this is a debut novel. An incredible depiction of how grief affects different people and relationships to self and others. Identity is weird and oftentimes couples with perception from others and the internalization of what should be. I loved how unapologetic M is and how understanding Uncle Luke is of that. I could say so much more. Bravo— I cannot wait for another book from Gerardo

What would happen if the grief we felt, materialised as a sentient being?
What would happen to the grief, and what would happen to us?
The answer: Monstrilio.

Words can not describe how good this book is, I devoured it in 24 hours.
So weird and so wonderful.
