Meh.

This was my first Dorothy Sayers book and I wasn't too impressed. The mystery was intriguing but easy to figure out. It also seemed to drag a bit.

Lord Peter Wimsey is a charming character, but his way of speaking I find very annoying. Or, it's less his way of speaking and more the way that his dialogue is created with several words losing letters, i.e. "It's awfully entertain' goin' and pumpin' him..." It made me think of him more as a Southern than a British gentleman.

But beyond this rather nitpicky observation, the book was fine. It picked up at the ending when we determine who the killer is and it gets a bit creepy. Reading other reviews tells me that this isn't the best Sayers book so I'll probably try another one of her creations before I pass on her all together. After all, she's something of a legend in the mystery world- so I look forward to reading more.

I think the book and the series has potential. I like Peter and Bunter. The main issue for me was how much dialogue there was. It was very much a tell not show situation and I'm unused to that in mystery novels. I also predicted the killer at the first vague mention of his identity. I'm going to check out the rest of the series and hope I like them more as it goes on.

Excellent dry comedy. Pity about the mystery.

I loved this book so much. The mystery is not the most twisty one I've read, but the character development and the way the consequences play out is excellent.

Excellent 1920s detective novel, the first to star Lord Peter Wimsey as sleuth. Mostly using his considerable charm, wit, and connections, Lord Peter works out who has made away with a Jewish banker and placed a similar-looking body in someone's bathtub, clad only in a monocle. The mystery is pretty good, but Lord Peter's eccentric manner of solving it and his relationship with official Scotland Yard Detective Mr Parker and his faithful retainer Bunter are what steal the show.
