The YA dystopian era is here and it didn’t come to play

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

The Last Refuge is a genre blended world full of alternate worlds, magical creatures and boundaries, and placements. It gives YA dystopias mixed with magic feels. Think a world with similar veins to The Hunger Games and Divergent in terms of technology and deadly trials. But then there's magic. What could go wrong? On an action, pacing, level The Last Refuge delivers almost non-stop thrills. However, I'm one of those readers who needs character introspection to connect and feel the weight of these moments and I just needed a few more crumbs to fall in love.

Poorly developed characters. Didn’t make sense why characters were so trusting and close when they had just met. Just didn’t do it for me.

This book stands out in the young adult genre as action packed, warm-hearted, and complex. I will be happy to read future releases in the series!

I went into this book blind after seeing the author on Instagram and falling in love with the cover and premise of this book. It took me 6 hours to read over 5 days.

The characters and the world. made this book for me. There were some instances where I thought things were a. little too convenient, however, that did not detract anything from this wonderful dystopian read. The found family trope in this was one of the best I have read and I loved the group that has been created.

I went into this blind and it didn't disappoint. The magical system, world-building, Dystopian plot, and the interesting cast of magical creatures we were introduced to throughout the story was captivating. I love a good found family plot as well and loved that it was included. The storybook world was very different from our own but provided real-world teachable moments related to government power, corruption, how people create/reinforce social class hierarchy, and how people from all of those classes can work together to fight the corruption and steer their world towards a better future for everyone.

As a debut novel, this author has made a mark and I look forward to reading subsequent books in the series.

This book has left me changed.... I have so much I would want to say about it but at the same time and left completely speechless by it! For me personally, this is a book of the year read for me, I loved it so completely! The found family especially impacts me the most as it is my favorite trope. I love the way the magic system works and just everything! Highly recommend!
