I was so hyped to read this after The Woman in the Library, but it didn’t work for me, unfortunately. A lot of the elements were really intriguing to me, but the story as a whole, combined with a lack of copy editing, just wasn’t it.

This book kept me engaged from beginning to end. Some of the twists were truly unexpected (even if the official summary is spoiler-ridden). The journey of an aspiring writer who has her world quickly implode around her will have you wondering who is behind everything and how all the threads weave together.

There are some moments of confusion or where characters act in ways that require you to really suspend your disbelief. The time skips toward the end felt a bit disjointed. Overall though, I was able to follow and stay engaged throughout.

Sorry needed to be tighter. Too many loose strands, and too many open questions as a result.

I very much enjoyed the first 70% of this book. I think the story line is very good. There are quite a few typos and grammatical errors throughout the book.

The last 30% of the book seems very rushed and thrown together. Starting at chapter 27 where Mac and Theo are talking with Laura about Benders. From there, it feels rushed. It does continue to follow the story line very well, but I feel like the timeline of events that happen are so far spread out with no indication of when they actually take place that it gets confusing.
Chapter 38 jumps around a lot, like it originally was 2 separate chapters and got accidentally combined into one or a glitch happened and a piece accidentally was inserted into the chapter and it shouldn’t have been. There was no breaks in it to indicate that it was jumping from Gus to Theo and back again.

Altogether, the book was a good read. The story line was great and I can honestly see something like the plot in this book, taking place in our world today.
Thank you to the publisher, the author, and to NetGalley for the ARC of The Mystery Writer.

First off, thank you to Netgalley and Poisoned Pen Press for an eARC for my honest review.

Loved this! From the first chapter I could not put this down! It’s completely different than what I expected. The cover made me think Contemporary Fiction, but it was a very in depth, unique thriller. I loved Gus, Theo, and Mac. I was hoping and praying throughout that Mac would not end up an antagonist. I won’t spoil it for you and say either way.

I put that it was slow paced just because it was very thorough. I enjoyed the small details and the glimpses of just normal life not detrimental to the plot. I’m jealous that they were able to live on pizza, burgers, and grilled cheeses the entire time.

Content warnings: excessive cursing (99% being F bombs.) no details with sex but mentions of past rape.
