"Si eres varón, y eres cristiano y vives en Estados Unidos, tu padre es tu modelo de Dios. Y si nunca conociste a tu padre; o si está en libertad bajo fianza, o se muere o nunca está en casa, ¿qué piensas de Dios? Es el dogma de Tyler Durden."

'Fight Club.' What an interesting book.
I assume you're familiar with the story, so I'll move directly to my impressions.
As the father of three sons aged 15-24, I feel like this novel captures the entitlement and anarchism of male youth. They're young, they're healthy, and they aren't in charge. Why don't all the old guys, the ones with the money and power, get out of their way and let them do what they want, give them what they obviously deserve? It also speaks to their deep need for a rite of passage - type experience. They want to prove themselves as men. They want to prove their courage, their wiliness, their dedication.
Additionally, I feel like this novel captures the sense of ennui that overtook many young American men in the late Nineties. The .com bubble was well underway, the US was the undisputed global hegemon, and some felt like there were no mountains left to climb. The WWII Book 'The Greatest Generation' was released in 1998, making young people of the time feeling even more inadequate, more neutered.
And with all this mind, Palahniuk wrote a book about reckless self-destruction and nihilism, a metaphor for addiction and a cry for help. He also wrote a book about interesting, if awful, people. He put those people in an interesting milieu and got me to care about them. I found that 'Fight Club,' at least on audio, raced right by. I was never tempted to switch over to Spotify and listen to whatever that service's awful AI DJ was serving up.
