Entertaining enough for me to keep reading, but there was an irritating lack of subtlety in the writing. The plot seemed rushed and underdeveloped at times. Still fun, though.
The concept is set up for cosy fantasy/sci-fi but the author chucks in really serious topics (sexual assault; miscarriage) only to breezily move on after ten pages or so.

This is a fascinating idea squandered on unlikable characters. We're lead to believe that Maxwell is 'not like other girls' but is often behaving like typical women from the 50s. At first I thought this took place in the past, but then emails were mentioned and I was like 'oh this is modern times' but it's so contradictory to the way Maxwell behaves or responds to things.
After one important incident that I won't spoil here, was the final straw for me. I love the concept of a secret group who is time traveling to be able to record and observe the past, but these characters suck.

This was such a fun book! Time travel, history, romance...and very very funny! Sometimes I got a bit confused because there are SO many characters, but overall, I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading more!
