doesn’t make a lot of sense, full of cliches, regrettably not full of character development. but as something to read on a trip, it did its duty

I received this book through a Goodreads giveaway. I love time travel books and really had high hopes for this but unfortunately it wasn't great. It's a quick fast read but it's all surface. There is no history in it at all (which for me is the fun part of time travel) perhaps the later books in the series get into it more and the first book was just to set up the premise. If that is the case I would have hoped for better character development but there wasn't any. I may give the second book a try but I'm not holding out hope.

OMG I loved it!! It’s a different book for me and was recommended by a running friend as a great book to read. I couldn’t stop listening, finished in 2 days

Three and a half stars. Best book I ever read? Nope. Light, fun time travel novel with likeable woman as central character? Yes! This one owes a huge debt to the (better) books with similar plot by Connie Willis and the late great Kage Baker. But with Willis writing slowly, and Baker sadly unlikely to write any more Company novels, these will do nicely. I'm glad to have found another series I can work in between heavier reads.

I'm a bit torn. This book starts out funny - and is funny, throughout - but don't let that fool you. There is some heavy stuff going on, not the least of which is the series of deaths over the course of the story. I much enjoyed the history and science side of things, and while I'm not crazy about dinosaurs, I loved the whole Cretaceous expedition. I was, of course, deeply invested in the second major mission, but I'm not gonna spoil it.

So, some really heavy stuff, though. Some people die. There are a few different flavors of sexual assault, and they are not, in my opinion, given enough consideration or discussion afterwards.
I also found the part about the miscarriage completely unnecessary; Max was suffering enough as was. Farrell's reaction upon finding out was beyond the pale.
I will assume that, given what was hinted at regarding the protagonist's backstory, there will be some profound character development in later books.

So, not as stellar as I'd hoped, but promising. The characters are interesting (there's a lot of them), and the premise is obviously amazing
, especially after the reorientation
. We also know that there is a BBEG that needs to be vanquished, so there will be more darkness to come. All this to say, I laughed out loud more than once, but there is real pain in here, as well. I'm looking forward to reading the next one.
