Hayley Kiyoko I love you but what is this? Generally the writing wasn’t great and things were very melodramatic, but it’s YA so I can forgive that to an extent. The main problem was that the main couple feels impossible to root for. The insta-love felt so unrealistic and over-the-top. Sonya consistently treats Coley like shit throughout the book and honestly I didn’t even want them to end up together. I understand that Sonya was struggling with her sexuality and had a lot of internalized homophobia going on, but I think that could have been portrayed without making her so downright cruel. She acted so terribly a good 90% of the time. I think the story would have benefitted from a dual POV to help understand her better. The ending was rushed, unrealistic, and didn’t feel convincing or lasting at all. I did like the relationship between Coley and her dad Curtis though. One extra star for Curtis alone because he really carried.

The last few chapters were good; however, it felt more like tropes than full character development, and that certain points of the plot were very rushed just to get to the "drama." The main character is somewhat likeable, but I would've appreciated more explorations of her personality besides the typical "dark and moody teen."

I’m so bummed by this book. It was pretty anticlimactic. I know this is Hayley’s first book, but it was so obvious while reading it. It was also read by Hayley and I just wish it was read by a pro because there was definitely a lack of emotion? Idk I know I couldn’t be a professional at this. I think a different narrator would’ve made it sound less cringey. I didn’t like the characters. The main girl, Coley, had just gone through a serious trauma and is also 17 so I’ll give her some slack, but the other characters were all just huge jerks. The main love interest, Sonya, is awful to Coley and yet Coley still idolizes her?? Also the main conflict at the end was incredibly problematic and was brushed over so quickly???? The whole story just really didn’t sit right with me…
