A masterpiece.

It has to take a lot to make me read this mammoth of a book. Yes, I know the story from the TV series, however I believe that to be more of a hinderance to my endurance upon reading this book.

The best storyline is Jon Snow. There’s nothing more captivating than his decisions and way of thinking and while all the Stark/Snow children are all catapulted into new worlds, his might seem the most tame but in short he is the quickest to sharpen.

The female characters are well written and while I cannot speak for the author, the sexism displayed in the men are simply what men are like in the real world and mirror issues and discriminations women deal with daily.

Perhaps if the author did not have such a way with character work then it would be blatant misogyny.

But overall this is an Epic. And while it doesn’t redefine fantasy, there’s something more human and truthful about this story that I don’t find in other classic fantasy - well, at its core this is not a fantasy story.

Who do I think should end up on the iron throne?

Possibly Jon. Possibly Cersei. But for me I can only see Sansa - yet I doubt even if George had all the time in the world and all the ink the earth could muster, he still would never finish the series.

DNF @ approximately 50%.

I watched the first season of the show. I never liked it, but I thought, "So many people like it, there must be something to it", and kept trying. Never watched the second season, though.

I listened to the audiobook halfway, then my free subscription of [whatever audiobook service I was using] ran out. I never liked the book, but I thought, "So many people like it, there must be something to it", and kept trying. Didn't feel like picking up a physical copy right away, though.

Then, about a year later, I picked up a physical copy of the book and made it through the prologue. That's it. I don't want to read anymore.

Not my cup of tea. Rating based on the 50% I listened to, not on the 13 pages I read.

I probably read this saga at a very young age. I was 13 if I’m not mistaken, so I blame my age on why the first 200 pages were hell for me. So much exposition and history lessons bored me to death. I get that Martin had a vision and wanted the readers to be up to date with the general world building, but it was dragging the pace of the story horribly. Once we get to King’s Landing with Ned the story picks up.
I loved the various POVs and how different each of them are, Martin truly knows his characters and embodies them whenever he tells their stories.
The political drama was *chefs kiss* I absolutely adore Daenerys, Cersei and Jon Snow. A great beginning for the series.
Also! Killing off Ned Stark just like that! I loved it, why? Because it made sense, Ned played his cards poorly out of honor and that got him dead. Catelyn made sloppy political moves that got the North raising banners perhaps too early. I just love flawed characters.

Watched the show for the first time a couple years ago and wanted to read the books. Feels like watching the show again with more details.
