I liked the setting & the characters but when the point of the whole scenario started happening it kinda fell apart for me. Didn’t hate it. gory slasher vibes, fast paced.

Had the potential of a really fun summer thriller and I loved the camp setting but the pacing really didn’t work for me. It felt like the characters felt really strongly about things that disappeared moments later and it didn’t come together for me.

I really loved the majority of this book. I was spooked the whole time and was on the edge of my seat. However, the ending was not done well and the way the last events unfolded took me out of the story and left me feeling unsatisfied.

After reading Kalynn Bayron’s genuinely scary story in the upcoming [b:Night of the Living Queers: 13 Tales of Terror Delight|61775756|Night of the Living Queers 13 Tales of Terror Delight|Shelly Page|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1673722583l/61775756._SY75_.jpg|97403217], I was very much ready to read her full-length horror. YOU’RE NOT SUPPOSED TO DIE TONIGHT is a little bit less scary in my mind, but still has a horrifying air to it and twists that I genuinely cannot stop thinking about. It plays off classics of the horror movie genre, while putting its own unique spin on horrifying things happening in the woods. What really hooked me and made this not just worth the read but something I’ll be talking about for weeks is the ending, which was both a plot twist upon a plot twist. This book is funny and queer while also being bloody and jaw-dropping, I highly recommend reading it!

The first half of this book was great. Moved along quickly while scattering little clues here and there. I liked Charity as a main character—she seemed to have a good head on her shoulders. I also liked the addition of Paige. She and Charity both did a good job of pointing out common horror movie cliches and avoiding them on purpose. (Though why did they mention Bezi’s car door if THAT wasn’t going to come into play?)

I wished that we had gotten to know better more of the secondary characters. I don’t feel like we got a great sense of who Porter, Tasha, or Javier are. I also wish we’d gotten to meet Felix, Heather, and Jordan at least briefly. I also wasn’t really a fan of the back half of the book. I won’t go into details to avoid spoilers, but it’s not the explanation I wanted.

Overall, there were some elements I really liked and it was a quick read. But it was a little gorier than I would have liked and I didn’t love the resolution.

Note: I received an ARC free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

This started off strong for me for a YA novel even though a lot of the dialogue was very cringey but it was fast paced and enjoyable nonetheless. Then it took a weird turn and I started not enjoying as much. It was okay but probably could have done with more tweaking before being released. Not exactly my cup of tea but it wasn’t terrible.
