captivating read, well weaved. tore it up in a day.

I wish the ending had been tied up a bit more, tho.
I wanted one more conversation with Rahul.

This was a little disappointing because I was really looking forward to reading the book. The premise was so interesting and I'm always down for a magic school setting. I thought the idea of what real teenagers would do if they had access to magic was really cool, I really liked that they were still teenagers with teenage problems. I think the first two thirds of the book were in the 4-5 star range for me. But then the plot really lost me towards the end. I kind of hated everything about the reveal and the resolution, and I really expected there to be more  dealing with the main character's personal issues. Instead it just felt a bit unresolved.

This book is a murder mystery in a high school that so happens to be filled with young mages.

Ivy is a private detective given the case. Ivy has no magic but her twin Tabitha does. Ivy tries to navigate the world of magic and murder whilst remarking that how similar the high school environments are.

Its a good book, even if the ending is abrupt and so many loose ends are left dangling.

This book was not for me.  The sloppy plot and pacing, the manipulative alcoholic investigating a school of magic when she is not magical...really?  Very disappointing.

So, this was not what I was expecting. I came across this book in some list and added it to my library audio holds and then went in pretty blind. For some reason I thought it was YA but it definitely isn't. Sure, it's set at a magic school and there's a prophecy about a Chosen One but that's where the typical YA fantasy genre tropes stop. It's a detective novel, tinged with magic and drama, full of queer characters (but coming out isn't a theme). There were continuous twists and it was a few chapters from the end before I was further ahead than our plucky, somewhat damaged detective. I was also thoroughly impressed with the narration, this was one of my longer audiobooks and I was so into it that at one point I just started into space sitting on my couch. There was so much packed into this book (do see the content warnings) and it delivered with a punch. What more can I say? I loved it.
