this is a beautiful and powerful book. the magic system is very unique and well developed. as a language nerd, i really enjoyed all of the interwoven etymology lessons. my biggest critique is that the pacing felt a bit off at times, especially in the first half.

Wow! This is such an incredibly researched historical fantasy. I loved how the author characterized each character so meticulously and I loved the lingustic messages. The anti-imperialism sentiment! The dark academia! The death!

And if you think any of the characters can stay happy for longer than 1 minute... think again!
