I can't say I enjoyed reading this book, however, it is an emotional read. Tara recalls her childhood on the mountains with her family. She is not allowed to go to school. She doesn't have a birth certificate or social security card. She does not exist according to the government. She learns to maneuver her families verbal and physical abuse.  She overcomes all of this and gets her higher education which exposes her to main stream life.

What a book. At times, it is very difficult to read, and it reads like a fiction book, whereas it is a memoir. Tara grows up without a birth certificate for the first 9 years of her life. No school education or hospital visits due to the beliefs of her parents and their distrust of the government.. She leaves home at 16 to escape the abuse and violence of her older brother and her fathers indoctrination. Her mother follows her father and his teachings. What follows is her struggle with her background and new life as she learns about herself and the world around her. Her thirst for knowledge and learning shines through. An inspirational, gripping, fascinating read about a dysfunctional religious Mormon family. Love for self eventually winning at a cost of eventual estrangement from her family that remains in the mountain home. The book leaves you thought-provoked about family portrayal/love but ultimately hope. Superb stuff
