A modern story in the vein of Rodriguez's A Hunger of Memory. Westover is a lovely writer and really immerses you in her world and her struggles, both psychologically and emotionally. So much so, that in reading the afterword and the acknowledgements at the end, I was almost surprised to find how many others had read and edited and supported the writing of it. It felt that intimate.

An excellent read for first generation college students, though her experience is so much more extreme, her reckoning with the cultural differences between home and college are helpful and recognizable for anyone who's going through it or has gone through it.

More relevant, even, for people trying to separate themselves from emotionally, physically, and psychologically abusive families.

Incredible story. Hard to believe that someone could live through everything that Westover did and still be able to see a lot of the good in the world. Would highly recommend.
