Rinn has grown up with tea dragons inhabiting their village, but stumbling across the real dragon turns out to be a completely different experience! Aedhan is a young dragon who was appointed to protect the village, but fell asleep in the forest eighty years ago. Rinn’s adventuring uncle Erik and his partner Hesekiel come to the village at the same time as Aedhan is woken up. There is a mysterious creature in the surrounding forest of Rinn’s village that is putting creatures and folk to sleep, and it is Erik and Hesekiel’s job to find it.

This tea dragon story is a sort of backstory for characters introduced in the previous book. It was just as elegantly done, even with the increase in more mature content. There is violence, depictions of blood, and death. But it is done with soft, gorgeous art and flowing story.

After picking up and enjoying the first book, I was excited to continue in this series.
“The Tea Dragon Festival” is the second book in the “Tea Dragon” series. Rinn is accustomed to the tea dragons she has encountered in her village, but she is not accustomed to meeting full blown dragons. Aedhan was a young dragon that was supposed to protect the village, but unintentionally fell asleep for 80 years. Now, they want to figure out why Aedhan fell asleep for so long, and help him cope with the time he lost.
This story was okay, but it did not have the same magic for me that the first one had. I love the art style and seeing all of the dragons, but ultimately, this story just did not captivate me. I found myself putting it down often and feeling disengaged from the plot. I think the synopsis was a great idea, it just dragged a little for me, and because of that, I felt like nothing happened in the story.
I will probably still pick up the next volume someday, but I am honestly not all that excited to do so.

I hadn't realized this is a prequel to The Tea Dragon Society, until quite late in the book. It explains a lot, though. Reading this made me nostalgic for a life that's never been mine. I yearn for a life with a loving, supportive community, in a queer-normative society, where the entire village is willing to learn sign language for the sake of a single child. K. O'Neill has created such a beautiful world.
These books are beautiful. I love the grumpy little tea dragons, and the gestural drawings of chickens in the backgrounds. I want the art from this book to decorate my walls. The story is incredibly immersive, in its comforting nature, and the illustrations intensify that quality exponentially.
