Absolutely a favorite of mine and my kids.

I accidentally read this whole thing while standing in a bookshop and it was delightful — just oddball goof-havery by way of an explained supernatural weirdo creature and at the expense of uptight Victorians. Huzzah!

I love Edward Gorey. Thanks to 80s college posters and my ex roommate Erica for introducing me to him. This is a very random story about a visitor who does not leave, with wonderful line drawings and great rhymes.

This was given to me by the woman in a tiny bookshop in my town. She has a shelf which she calls “the cemetery” where she exhibits beautiful illustrated books. One of them was this one. I had seen it several times but never picked it up because I was amazed by the other books, bigger and opulent. However, she said that she loved this author and that ir was similar to my book taste, so she gave it to me as a Christmas present. And she was right. Such a short book but still with beautiful illustrations, witty rythms and a pretty good metaphor about kids living in their parents home.

Hey, Edward Gorey!

I just met you and this is crazy,
but here's my number,
so murder me in one of your books maybe!

You see this weird penguin-like creature with a striped scarf and white canvas shoes, wandering about, carelessly mysterious and not understood by anyone, including the reader. Is it a metaphor for pets? Children? Aliens? Who knows. All I can say is that you fall in love with it pretty soon.
