I enjoyed the plot and writing. The characters all had very well rounded personalities and had intricate journeys. Which i found impressive as all of them had different perspectives and values.

The conversations of grief, family, racism and black history was all thought provoking and insightful.

I was very much thrown for a curve at the halfway point when the reveal shifts the story and it was very well done.

I will be keeping an eye on this authors!

everything ties together VERY neatly at the end, which took me a bit out of the story but i guess is pretty standard for a YA book. i would have liked the resolution to last a bit longer, feels like a lot of really interesting stuff was skipped between the last chapter and epilogue

I was enjoying this book until the "twist". Before this moment the story was heartfelt and was involving social justice topics. I felt for Happi and her storyline was emotional and strong. She was facing losing a sister and finding out there were secrets kept from her. She also honored Kenzi with a trip to try to see things the way her sister did. This story was four stars.

Negative stars goes to the twist storyline. I hate multiple coincidences in realistic stories. All of the coincidences come after the twist and there are some doozies here. The whole storyline takes any believability from the whole book. It should have been two books, not one.

I really enjoyed this. I really liked Happi and how she struggled and felt guilty. There was random povs that I was kind of confused why they were there. Like they made sense especially one later one but it was kind of weird. As the the second half of the book I was a little shocked because I had that thought but I was like well no way it that going to happen because it was I thought out of left field for this type of book usually but I liked it. I do wish the epilogue was a little different and we got to see some interactions.
